Orongo Bay Holiday Park

Orongo Bay Holiday Park, based in Russell offers a safe environment including a Lodge facility purposely designed for school groups. The Lodge is equipped with a good sized kitchen, a large lounge/dining room and a log fire for those winter nights.  The Lodge sleeps up to 70, with adjacent cabins which can sleep another 20 guests. We are able to offer dedicated use of this facility for school groups, including the use of dedicated male and female bathrooms completely separate from any other guests.

The Park also has a dedicated camping site area, which has its own cooking facilities and eating stations. Facilities within the Park include campfire area, Burma trail, swimming pool, playground, wifi, large wood fired pizza oven and an undercover BBQ area which all offer ideal socialising areas for school groups.

Due to working with a number of schools within a variety of roles, as Managers we are both aware of the pressures and commitment’s teachers have to endure on a daily basis. We feel that Russell–Orongo Bay Holiday park, has the accommodation and facilities which can be used to assist and provide young people with the opportunity to enjoy and take part in not only educational, but recreational activities.

There can be barriers which prevent some young people from gaining experiences in these areas, and as Managers we hope to be part of activities and programmes that can encourage young people to identify by self-knowledge and exploration, their own interests, abilities and attributes, Thus enabling them to engage, thrive and prosper with confidence and positive energy.

Russell has a variety of historic sites to explore, and is an ideal base for all stages of the school curriculum.

Conservation:

43 species of bird have been observed at the park including rare New Zealand wildlife, e.g Kiwi, North Island Weka, Fern birds and Pateke.

In 2016 we will be given the program on New Zealand bird life, particularly the North Island Weka (filmed at the park by the BBC in 2015) which can be accessed by school groups.

Eco tourism/Responsible Tourism:

Russell – Orongo Bay Holiday Park is the only Holiday Park in Northland with a Gold Level Enviro award.
